Individuals often follow the latest trends, our society may not succeed as a result. In Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse, a seventeen year old girl, whom was one of the main characters in the novel feared individuals that were her own age. Clarisse had a very well intentioned fear and was “afraid of children my own age. They kill each other. … Six of my friends have been shot alone. … My uncle says his grandfather remembered when children didn’t kill each other.”(Bradbury 34). Clarisse speaks of their society where the children try and kill each other on a routine basis. In their society, the people are consumed by the technology as well as what appears on the television. Students living in fear was a result of what their fellow classmates may or may not be capable of doing. Individuals also could follow what was happening on the television, and like any other horrific event it would of been broadcasted on every single news channel. The repost button or that retweet was not a problem for individuals then, but it poses a threat now. Individuals have become desensitized and continually is on the rise; desensitization is on the rise because of how often these posts appear on our news feed. Reposts throughout social media have caused people to instantaneously see posts around the world within a matter of seconds and people have become okay with seeing the tragic things as if it were simply nothing. In the last decade, the technology of cell phones continues to become more and more “inextricably woven into our daily lives — an almost invisible driver of modern life”(Almendrala). Perhaps, individuals need to be cautious about what is seen on their social media in order to not become desensitized; as well as to help other individuals from seeing caustic side of social media and becoming more desensitized every
