Sexual violence is a wicked problem, in that there is no specific solution to stop these violent actions from happening completely. Through our research, we learned that depending on your culture, values, background and social circle, the problem can affect people differently, and in that, no solution could be the same. Richard Buchanan uses the word indeterminate often, which could be used to help define the issue of sexual violence. Though we as designers can- not offer a concrete solution, we can offer a safe space and environment for survivors who are trying to move for- ward. They explain how technol- ogy is developing very quickly in our modern day society and why it is im- portant to reflect upon and to critique designs in the industry to develop alter- native and more sustainable visions. They explain how there are two catego- ries of design: the affirmative and the critical. Affirmative design reinforces how designs currently are based on so- cial, cultural, economic and technical expectations. Critical design rejects how designs currently are and provides cri- tiques as well as alternative social, cul- tural, economic and technical values. A major issue that the authors explore is the idea of successful or “popular” de- sign which is created for the market- place. The main purpose of many de- signers is to create new products which are better, smarter and faster than the previous with the goal to make a large profit. It has come to the attention that major corporations now have a larger influence on reality than the government and buying power is more successful than voting power. Critical design cri- tiques the ideas behind popular design to think about what we really need in society as well as to develop a discus- sion amongst other designs, the public and major corporations. The wicked problem with industries are their unwill- ingness to take a more responsible and pro-active role within society, as they constantly want to make more money by creating better products that we do not necessary
