Desiree’s baby: Who killed Desiree? In the short story Desiree’s baby written by Kate Chopin, the theme of discrimination based on physical characteristics finally pushed Desiree to step on the road of no return.

The racial discrimination is the thing which strangle their love and marriage.“That was the way all the Aubignys fell in love, as if struck by a pistol shot.” "It means," he answered lightly, "that the child is not white; it means that you are not white."and went away leaving her alone with their child.(chopin 4)”Before they got married,Armand felt in love with her at the first sight, as if struck by a pistol shot which suggested that his love for her was generated all of a sudden.This kind of love is always fleeting as time went by. Once he came up with the idea that Desiree might not be a pure white, his love for her no longer exists.Under the pressure of racism, love was delicate.

This could be shown from that Desiree’s mood always fluctuates with Armand’s mood. “when he frowned she trembled but loved him.When he smiled,she asked no greater blessing of god.”(2) Her love was humble and she lived without dignity. Throughout the story,Desiree always accepts everything passively, her life is all around Armand.In that age, the woman is an attachment to the man, the concept of gender discrimination have become ingrained in people’s mind.Women were treated as the tool of producing offspring for men as well as a beautiful doll for fun.
