Heroism isn’t something that comes instinctively to people. Humans have a natural tendency to go into fight, flight, or freeze mode when presented with a situation that obscures our typical surroundings. People’s capabilities are pushed to the limits when they are in intense situations; taking an incredulous amount of bravery to defy the common standpoint people take when they are put to the test. Not to mention the nobility and integrity that comes along with it. Desmond Doss was an exceptional hero. As a World War II American Army Combat Medic, he displayed with such an aptitude the meanings of bravery, nobility, and integrity. His love for mankind and God far out-weighed the insults and travesty forced upon him for believing in something greater than anyone else. Desmond Doss was a conscientious believer and wouldn’t shoot a gun throughout the entirety of his service in the military. When he was sent to a rifle company though, his beliefs generated a lot of conflict. He wouldn’t even consider touching a weapon that was meant for any kind of destruction, leading him to be endowed with horrid mockery. His determination prepared him for the worst when he headed into battle unarmed. Doss was sent to a cliffside in Okinawa, Japan called Hacksaw Ridge. When everyone was ordered to leave the battlefield, he stayed behind. Alone, he spent the night rescuing wounded soldiers that otherwise would’ve been left to die. He lowered them down the cliff with a single rope, making sure to not let a single man drop. All the while being targeted by the Japanese, he underwent numerous bullets and managed to survive. His perseverance exemplifies the standards of bravery, titling him with over 10 accolades including The Medal of Honor and three Purple
