In the year 1942 everyone carried a gun including medics in the U.S. Army. Desmond Doss didn’t want to carry a gun because he was a seventh day adventist that followed the 10 commandments very strictly. The 6th commandment was Thou shalt not kill so Doss stuck to it. Once Doss enrolled in the army he wanted to be a medic but medics carried sidearms. However, as the army tried to force him into using a weapon Doss took a stand by following his beliefs in not taking a gun, yet still proving he could save men as well as an armed man.
The largest event occurring at this time of these was World War Two. Men were being drafted for the war willingly and wanted to seve to the point that some men went to extremes of killing themselves since they couldn’t serve. At this point Desmond Doss was working in a Shipyard in The town of Newport News, Virginia. He could have took a deferment but like other men he refused to since he wanted to serve. However, this would all change. Things started shaping up when the 77th division went to Guam. When they went to Guam Desmond stuck with his unit and was devout in his efforts. Not to mention the fact of how Cunningham went running away from the fight drawing attention to him instead of Desmond.
After Guam the 77th division went into the battle of Okinawa which was the bloodiest battle in World War Two. When they arrived they fought their way to a place known as Hacksaw Ridge where Doss really took his stand. Hacksaw Ridge was a place where a battle raged for a decent amount of time. The battle largely consisted of The Americans holding the ridge then the Japanese running them off the Ridge at night.
