Destruction Of Honesty In Lorenzo's Son

In this scene, Lorenzo is trying to instill honesty in his son. His son received money from Sonny, the mob boss. Calogero does not understand who Sonny is, or what he does. Calogero also does not understand why his father is so upset that he received money from Sonny. During the fight between Sonny and Lorenzo, Sonny displays power. According to Kimmel, “Power is not to be applied like a fashion accessory; it is an inner confidence and security, as well as a real hierarchical position” (211). Sonny has the inner confidence and security of his people around him to take the fall for him, but most importantly he has the hierarchical position of the mob boss. Sonny rubs this power in Lorenzo’s face but having Calogero work for him. Sonny also rubs his wealth in Lorenzo’s face. However, Lorenzo sees right through this “power.” …show more content…
Lorenzo does not want his son to be involved with Sonny and his crew. He shows anger towards Sonny and Calogero to protect his son’s future. Lorenzo feels that a father should be the one to tell him to go to school and get a job. He feels that his father should be the one protecting him, not the mob or Sonny. Most importantly, it is a father’s job to shape their son into an honest man. Lorenzo does all of this by standing up to Sonny. The dialog I enjoyed the most was:
Lorenzo: “But try and get up every morning, day after day and work for a living. Let’s see him try that, then we’ll choose the real tough guy. The working man is a tough guy, you’re father is the real tough guy” (2:02 - 2:10).
Calogero: “Everybody loves him. Just like everybody loves you on the bus. It’s the same thing” (2:11 - 2:14).
Lorenzo: “People don’t love him, they fear him” (2:16 -
