Determination in The Earth on Turtle’s back
A determination is a skill many of us desire to have; it is something many of us strive for. Despite this, however, we are still no different than the Crow Magnum man that lived twenty-five thousand years ago, our DNA has barely changed and we still operate from the reptilian brain. In other words: determination is an important skill to have, it is a certain process of establishing something no matter how difficult the task may be, but where do you pull the line? What are the limits, if any? And how does determination greatly affect the short story “The Earth on Turtle’s back?” A determination is something that plays an important role in the short story by not only impacting the characters but also the reader’s experience in several profound ways.

Fortunately for her, however, two swans come to her aid and rescue the girl from falling to her death. The Animals quickly come to notice that the ancient chief’s wife is not a water creature, therefore is not able live in water either. After a quick discussion between the animals on what to do with the woman, they come to the conclusion that one of them needs to go deep underwater to reach earth; grab some dirt, and make planet earth on the back of a turtle for humanity to live on. The problem presents itself rather quickly however when the animals notice that none of them can swim deep enough to grab the earth and take it with them to the surface. This is where opportunity presents itself for a tiny Muskrat. “I will bring up earth or die to try.” This is a sign of extreme determination. “Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” – Steve
