Psychology, the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, seeks to describe, predict, and explain behaviors to gain a better understanding of normal or unusual behavior, as well as creating change. This field consists of many subfields that deal with particular areas within the study of behavior, mind, and brain. What appeals to me most about psychology is how these subdivisions come together to unveil the complexity of this broad field. Upon taking this course, I thought of psychology only in relation to mental illnesses, but now, this perspective has changed. He believes that in order for individuals’ to progress in life, they must proceed through social stages. One of Erikson psychosocial stage of interest is the Intimacy vs. Isolation, which deals with young adults’ abilities or inabilities to form intimate relationships. In this stage, young adults are faced with the challenge of creating intimate relations with others. These individuals are dear to me; they are people I can always consult for guidance, encouragement, but most importantly they are people that believe in me. Every now and then, I am pressurized by my friends, noting that I should’ve been dating “John” or “Peter” already; however, my desire for a true life time partner never cease, which I now understand as crisis of Intimacy vs. Isolation stage. This journey was one I felt I would’ve not survive, but thanks to the loving hearts of my friends and family who have helped me pull through during such a difficult time in my life.
It’s a cliché to say knowledge is power but it is, indeed. Taking psychology in general has not only expanded my knowledge of psychology as whole, it also enhanced my ability to reason cognitively and observes the world around me at multiple perspectives. Above all, the crises faced in Intimacy vs. Isolation were crucial to my understanding.
