In “The Devil’s Arithmetic” Hannah is a girl that doesn’t think very much of her family, she’s not traditional nor likes her Jewish celebration, but that all changes on one Seder night. She goes back in time to learn what is most important. The Novel was very descriptive, therefor, I watched the movie. The movie gave me a visualized version of the novel, it helped me get a better understanding about how the Jews were abused and butchered in the concentration camp.

The Novel begins in Hannah’s Mother’s car and they are having argument about going to the Seder, their Jewish tradition. Hannah does not want to go, but her mother is forcing her this time. In the Novel Hannah is a young teenager, and she has a younger brother named Aaron. When they get there it is traditional to drink wine on Seder night during dinner. Hannah is much older and can drive. Aaron does not appear in the film. She has dirty blonde hair I can infer these details because the movie gave a complete description by showing Hannah on the screen. Gitl did not appear in the film. I could not make these evaluations in the book, because there were hardly any physical descriptions. In the film there was no train, the Jews got to the camp by automobiles. 3 Men tried to escape fro the camp during the night ,but failed and were hung in front of all the other Jews for intimidation the next morning. Hannah’s cousin Rivka who actually turns out to be Hannah’s Aunt Eva from the past ,and when she was in the concentration camp. Rivka got sick and the Germans took any sick Jews away. So Hannah disguised herself as Rivka with her scarf, and Hannah was taken away instead of Rivka. That way her Aunt Eva could live.
