The literary work in the novel, ` Devils Highway,’by Luis Urrea, is a didactic piece of literature that dwells on the real issue of illegal immigration. The novel, based on tragic real events, lays out the story of a group of illegal Mexican migrant workers striving to enter the United States and the adversity of the journey they faced through the deadliest part of the Arizona desert, christened the Devils Highway. Furthermore, the story is one that marvels at the brevity and hope of the human spirit despite harsh situations in life .The author covers pertinent issues as brought out by the characters as well as the events in his novel.

As a manipulative character in the novel he covers up the tracks of the illegal trafficking activities rather well. The author provides a detailed account of El Chespiro condescending behavior towards the lower level guides to bring out the theme of social status. The behavior of El Chespiro as discerned in the novel serves to show how social class separation is used to exploit and manipulate the poor. El Chespiro, as revealed in the novel, does not speak to the lower guides on a face to face basis .As a technique of limiting contact with the lower class guides he only prefers to talk to them via their seniors or through a cellphone. El Moreno’s character description by the authors serves to highlight the theme of crime involved in the illegal human trafficking trade, For instance in the novel, both El Negro and El Moreno are engaged in bribing of the local Indians and drugs lords in the places they carry out the trade so as to avoid being caught by U.S border
