The character of Melvin Udall in the movie, “As Good as it Gets,” suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. After consulting the DSM-5 one can identify which behaviors of his are considered obsessive-compulsive behaviors. The first obsessive-compulsive behavior would be doing everyday things in sets of five. He turns the door knob five times because he feels like he has to or else it is not done “right.” It may not make sense, but it does not have to make sense to anyone else but the person who suffers from OCD. Another behavior Melvin exhibits would be bringing his own silverware to the restaurant. He does this because he is afraid of germs, and because it is also part of his routine. He also exhibits a fear of germs by constantly wearing gloves, another obsessive-compulsive behavior. And lastly, he sticks to a strict daily routine that he must follow. …show more content…
He goes to the same restaurant at the same time, sits in the same spot, where he has the same waitress (Carol), and orders the same food. This routine is arguably soothing to Melvin. When his routine is interrupted he would do almost anything to get his routine back, including paying for Carol’s son’s medical expenses so Carol can go back to work and continue to wait on him. This is not “a random act of kindness,” because Melvin is not very kind and doesn’t often think of others. This act was to benefit Melvin, and his routine so he could have the stability that he so craves. This act shows how sever his obsessive compulsive disorder
