El dia de los muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated on november first and second to honor loved ones who have passed away. It started out as a tradition over three thousand years ago by the spanish conquistadors. They believed that the doors of heaven are opened on october 31st allowing the angels to be with their loved ones for 24 hours. On the second day the adult spirits come down to enjoy everything that was specifically made for them. On day of the dead families make a lot of different delicious homemade food and sing to honor loved ones usually at the graveyard. This is what usually happens on dia de los muertos. People make a lot of homemade food on dia de los muertos such as pan de muerto which is bread usually only made on day of the dead. Its mainly made of milk, sugar, eggs and flour. Another food that is made on day of the dead is, day of the dead cookies. People also make big cakes instead of the cookies if they want to make more complicated food. They are basically normal cookies/cakes in skull shapes with sugar skull decorations. Tamales is one of the most popular foods that is made on day of the dead.
