This 50 year old man is suffering from chronic gastritis which has progressively developed overtime while acute gastritis is more sudden and more severe. In this case it has developed overtime due to his intake of alcohol from beer drinking. Factors that may have led to gastritis can be the result of an imbalance of the gastric juices resulting from prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). But in his case it is the overindulgence in alcohol that caused erosion from the stomach lining. Therefore, chronic gastritis puts people at risk for peptic ulcer disease and some will develop atrophic gastritis which will eventually destroy the cells in the stomach lining (MUSC Digestive Disease Center, n.d.).
A common test for gastritis is to do an endoscopy with a biopsy of the stomach. A sample of tissue will be taken and examined under a microscope. Other procedures could also be carried out such as doing an upper gastrointestinal series and do a blood test to check or anemia which may be a sign for chronic bleeding in the stomach. She can also do a stool test to check for blood and test for H. pylori infection as the doctor tests the patient’s breathing, blood or stool for signs of infection(MUSC Digestive Disease Center, n.d.).
