During the burning of books at the bonfire. Death is confused why people enjoy watching things burn to pieces. Soon the people will get tired of a little burning book and want to see bigger, better and more entertaining things be destructed.

Death is showing the reader what it is like for people in other parts of Europe. In Liesel’s life she is being a child by playing soccer and going to school. Soon she will have to learn what is really happening in the world. A lot of Jews were dying in concentration camps.

Liesel is given a black book from Ilsa Hermann where she will write about everything that happened in her life thus far. When she starts writing, she learns that words are good and bad for people. She wants to make sure she made it right by writing a story of love and friendship.
