At All Costs is a biography that takes the reader through the life of medal of honor recipient Chief Master Sgt. Dick Etchberger. The book outlines his remarkable successful enlisted career where he quickly rose through the ranks at a remarkable rate due to his leadership and technical skills. Etchberger is one of few airmen to ever receive the Medal of honor, and he is among an even smaller minority of enlisted airmen to ever receive this honor. The story starts out by detailing Dick’s childhood and how from a young age, he had discipline instilled in him. His parents suffered through the great depression and his father determined to never lose his house again successfully managed some businesses in which his two sons Dick and Robert both worked at. Instead of playing sports the boys had to work at the store, but although they weren’t in sports, Dick was especially involved in numerous activities and clubs in high school years. Etchberger decided to join the Air Force with his good friend, who later back out at the last minute. He went off to basic training at Sampson Air Force base on October 1951 later going on to radar bomb scoring at Keesler Air Force base. The crew was not able to evacuate the facility without the consent of the ambassador. The facility was completely rigged to blow in case the facility was taken to erase any evidence. An attack on the facility was evident and the crew was instructed they would be evacuated the next day by helicopter and the facility to be destroyed. Unfortunately for the crew this would not be soon enough as the facility was attacked by mortar that
