In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden he uses imagery as well as diction and symbolism in order to show the speakers careless attitude towards his father. Imagery is used constantly through the poem to assist the reader in understanding the poem. Diction plays a role in the attitude by using words that emphasise the situation. Symbolism is used to enhance the meaning of the fire and the story in general.
The speaker's father prepares for the day and puts his clothes on, “with cracked hands that ached.” Being able to picture the fathers worn and worked hands gives the reader a clear idea of how the father worked to the point that is hands were damaged and the child seems to not even notice his father's work.
