At the dawn of the thirteen colonies, many rich individuals came to New World to explore and start a new life with new opportunities. They were promised land that will become theirs to grow tobacco, sugar, and new crops. However, that was the main problem: men from New England did not know how to farm. After the starving time, those who survived needed extra hands to grow tobacco, which became a cash crop. So indentured servants and slaves were hired to do the hard labor at minimum pay. Needless to say, life was hard and the hours were long for both. However, as they started to become more independent from the King, they also needed someone to teach the children born in the New World basic and advanced education. While, slaves were mainly from Africa and had little to no education. Then, a margin was established. Indentured servants only had to work a few years (4-7 years average), but some were still poorly. Some worked until their death, depending on their luck and their masters. Slaves were treated as property; as an object that can be replaced easily. Most slaves were captured illegally, and brought against their own will. This is when distinction was made between too. Unfortunately, color became a matter of discussion overtime. The darker the skin (because of the geological reasons), meant Africa, which meant slavery. White skin, meant Europe, which leads to a slightly superior status.
