Although slavery existed in the North and South prior to the Antebellum period, after the American revolutionary war the North and the South began to have 2 different and distinct views politically,economically and socially. The North had a large white population and its economy was solely based on free labor, the South on the other hand had a slave population was larger than those of whites and plantation owners Thus, their economy was primarily based on slave labor. Because the South’s economy was based on agriculture and producing raw materials that they sold to other countries they favored low tariffs. The North favored higher tariffs in order to encourage a “pro american” attitude. During this time period the North started to have an economy based on mass producing in factories.The North and the South were interdependent and the american economy relied on slave labor to function efficiently. There was a sense of community that all blacks had with each other that facilitated their traditions, religions and ultimately helped them survive the oppression of being enslaved.Slaves used the the ideals found in christianity to help them through the hardships of being a slave. They had secret meeting in the woods where they would worship and fellowship. Slave took resistance to a new extreme when they began passively resisting their masters. They worked slower, they broke tools, they refused to eat, they even poisoned their masters in order to escape bondage.Occasionally slaves abandoned passive ways of resisting being enslaved and they fought back when masters would attempt to discipline them for being rebellious.
