Political Parties: Then and Now

Elections have never lost their popularity, from the 18th century to the 21st century. Now, elections are viewed and followed over all different types of platforms. They are very important to the American people, because the elected officials can greatly affect history. It is vital to know the history of the political parties where these elected officials are from. Believe it or not, these political parties have not changed much over time, they mostly have the same principles.
The two original political parties were Federalists and Antifederalists. They had very different views on almost every subject. Federalists believed in a strong central government and weak state governments, while the Anti federalists wanted strong state governments and a weak central government. Important federalists were Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and George Washington. They favored the Constitution and believed it protected individual rights. John Hancock, Patrick Henry, and George Mason were key Antifederalists.

Republicans are much alike the Anti Federalists while Democrats are like the Federalists. Their principles did not change too much over time. Republicans believe in more power for the states and less control for the central government. That can be compared to the Anti Federalists, who believed in a weaker central government. Democrats believe in a stronger, central government like the Federalists. Their supporters and the people they aimed to aid, are very much the same as well. Small farmers, and skill workers are favored by the Republicans and Anti Federalists. Democrats are supported by a lot of businessmen, merchants, and bankers as the Federalists were.
