When Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November of each year, we celebrate it in remembrance of a time of peace between the explorers of the New World and the Native Americans. From the time we are children, we are presented with the idea that the Pilgrims were the heroes, coming to America to found a new country based on the ideals of liberty and freedom. We also find ourselves presented with the idea that the Native Americans were little more than brute savages, slaughtering and terrorizing the Europeans that settled in America. Upon further reading, however, one may be surprised, as I was, to find that the stories recounting the heroism of the settlers and the terrorism of the Native Americans are not entirely true. Historical evidence, such as the writings of the settlers, shows an entirely different side of the Native Americans that is nurturing, accepting, and even silly. …show more content…
Several tales show that the natives were quite nurturing and cared deeply for their children. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca tells of the natives’ love for their children in his letter to Emperor Charles V, writing that, “These people love their offspring more than any in the world and treat them very mildly” (45). He further details their mourning rituals for their children that last for an entire year (Cabeza de Vaca 45). It does not seem fitting that a brutish and barbaric people could love anyone so intensely. Very few, if any, other cultures have ever mourned so deeply over the loss of
