Was she young? Was she old? Was Rivka really her cousin? After perusing the Devil’s Arithmetic and Watching the movie, I perceived numerous differences and resemblances between the two versions of the story, “The Devil’s Arithmetic”. Various parts of the movie weren’t even present in the book at all, and vice versa. Granted, there were a few similarities. There were the general, accustomed ideas, such as “Never forget”, which is a fundamental reason why Jane Yolen wrote this inspiring book. In the book, Hannah Stern is a limited, slightly immature teen who is conventionally done with family Jewish Seders. She has overtaxed her brain with remembering and doesn’t deduce the importance of getting together. But all that is refined when she is shifted into the past after opening the apartment door for the Prophet Elijah. Going to a wedding, then getting sent into the concentration camps for “resettlement” is what preceded. At the end of the book Hannah ends up saving Rivka, her friend, and returns to her home. In the movie, on the other hand, we see an older girl, in her late teens, who is sarcastic, irascible, and plain out disgusted she has to go to the Seder. Clearly, these camps were no picnic. Death and Destruction had been just around the corner. Hannah was still dispirited about going to the Seder, and she was still Aunt Eva’s favorite niece. But apart from that, you have hope that they will survive another day, Hannah encourages the POW’s by telling them stories, and the certainty that Hannah will return home and Rivka will survive. The plot, where Hannah is transported into the past, is alike. There were bounteous differences, but you can definitely contemplate the harrowing journey throughout the
