The above quote is said by Owen Meany after he accidently murders John Wheelwrights mother, Owen does not believe that mistakes are genuine so when he hits the baseball that kills John’s mother he begins to see himself as an ‘instrument of god’. One of the most paramount aspects of this novel is the eternal bond John and Owen seem to form despite their explicit incongruities, their social, physical, cultural and religious differences, and of course the accidental murder of Johns mother. It is these contrasting traits that make Owen and John’s friendship so extraordinary, John is the more physical and socially capable individual and because of this it is assumed that John will care for and protect Owen but as the boys grow older it becomes furthermore apparent that Owen is actually the protector in this friendship, he prohibits John from having to fight in the Vietnam war and he stays behind at school just for John’s wellbeing.
Despite Owens physical differences and his ‘wrecked voice’ he is a confident and self-assured individual, whether John chooses to explicitly believe it or not he is aware of how special Owen truly is, everyone is aware of Owens individuality and how spectacular he is but it is only John who is aware of the extent of Owens differences and how special Owen really

Owen becomes an aide in the search for John’s biological, unnamed father. Owen has this consistent influence on John that will guide and dictate his whole life. Owen helps John try and identify his biological father and Owen ensures John does not have to fight in the Vietnam War, Owen single handily wrote the script for John’s life. John has this realisation at the end of the novel that Owen dictated and wrote John’s whole life, and during this realisation it became apparent that Owen wrote the whole of his own life too, but he never revealed
