Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood shows two different types murderers through Perry and Dick. While Dick is characterized as fundamentally manipulative, cold, and calculating, Perry is characterized as complicit, showing how a desperate need for love and approval can turn any human into a murderer. Capote wants the reader to be sympathetic of this character when Perry’s ideas always have Dick in the middle, no matter if he is present or not. Perry, who has dreams of his own, feeds off of approval and will do anything to get it. Perry’s love for travel always comes with boundaries when Perry’s mind goes to what Dick would think of him.
