Birth, growth, illness, and death are the four compulsory stags of life. Death is the most mysterious, and it has always attracted and frightened people among those phases. Emotions and the attitudes on death can be described as a directly proportional relationship in people’s life. These sentiments include fear, belongingness, and burdensomeness. People are scared about death because nobody in the world knows when will it come and what will be happened after it. Before Dr. Ransom meets any creatures, he views everything with fear and decides to commit suicide. As the journey keeps going, he starts to change to another angle. His fear has been reduced and “the idea of suicide was now far from his mind” (Lewis, 30). With a sudden confidence, he starts accepting the facts and meets the first hross which named Hyoi. During the associate time, Dr. Ransom’s fear is gradually weakening, and revise his point of view to the hrossa. Instead of treating as a creature, he looks at them as humans, and “The creature was talking. It had language” (Lewis, 35). This illustrates that fear can be reduced when people start accepting terror and unknown. In the hrossa’s culture, they hold an opposite outlook on death. They believe that it is the greatest honor to kill the hnakra, and welcome death as a wonderful transformation. Although there are different cultures between Dr. Ransom and the hross, the relationship between fear and death is the same. When Dr. Ransom accepts the lifestyle on Malacandra and makes friends with the hrossa, his fear has reduced and the attitude towards death also changes, which the idea of suicide has disappeared. Elwin Ransom shows his fear in the airship. He is not familiar with anything inside the spaceship, and fear about various unknown danger. In order to deal with fear, he decides to commit suicide if he is failed to escape from Weston and Devine. As fear increases, the attitude toward death will trend to negative, such as ending the life with unnatural death. However, when Dr. Ransom starts getting use of a new environment and learn to accept different creatures on the planet, he becomes for comfortable and even build up his confidence. This has reduced his fear and led to a positive perspective. During the days that he spends with the hross, his idea of suicide is gone and he is trying to change the view of death. After having conversations with Oyarsa, he understands various viewpoints on fear and death. He experiences the process of changing from a negative outlook of death to a positive one, and shapes his unique understanding on death after the whole
