Six degrees of separation is a concept that I’ve come to comprehend within the last year. My world became smaller and smaller as I moved from place to place. I am aware that my “world” is a bit immature, as I am only 18-years-old, but I can’t help but think at this day-and-age we are all connected. Just the simple fact that I’m in a college-level course studying composition -- but I will never meet face-to-face with any of my peers or my instructor is ludicrous. Granted I feel that part of the connections I’ve made have been via social media, there is one experience that truly showed me how microscopic we all are in this universe. It was a sunny, yet chilly day in concrete jungle. My plans were to meet up with someone and explore our new home all day long. Since said person completely bailed with not a single notice, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to really get to know the one, true love of my life, New York City. The previous evening I had gone out with a group of friends wearing very distinct attire. We were only out for a bit, so I found it acceptable in proceeding my next day venture in the same clothing. There I was; I had taken the train from Brooklyn to an unknown destination on the lower east side of Manhattan. All seemed normal when I arose from the platform. I strolled the streets with my sunglasses on and headphones in my ears. As I entered Mulberry Street, better known as Little Italy, I glanced up to see a girl standing in front of a restaurant. As we made eye contact, time stopped. If this were in a movie, everyone around us would have been blurred in the shot and the sound would have been blocked out. The night before this dramatic motion picture-like scene took place was just like any other night. After leaving NYU’s campus housing and departing my friends, I hopped on the 4-5-6 train to head back to my home in Brooklyn. I noticed a mom and daughter sitting across from me struggling with a map. Though I wasn’t technically a “New Yorker”, I knew my way around fairly well, so I offered to help.
