As a strong supporter of the Republican Party, I believe it is in our best interest to designate more of our resources to cater to the unrecognized Asian American demographic. The three biggest policies that Asian Americans focus on are the importance of the economy/jobs, health care, and education. Thus, there is no need to shift the party’s focus away from these issues, but to continue to express our viewpoints to sway the large percentage of Asian Americans that identify themselves with the independent/non-partisan party. Primarily, the amount of resources that must be spent in order for a party to effectively communicate with this demographic to express the beliefs of the party. For example, there is currently a lack of in-language polling material for many Asian Americans, which inhibit them from polling. After participating in the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund polling activity, I quickly realized that if the costs for creating translated materials is too high, neither Democratic nor Republican Party will make the attempt to directly speak with non-English speakers. But our party must make further strides to reach this community, Charles Murray states “Large number of Independents and Democrats who are naturally attracted to arguments of fiscal discipline, less government interference in daily life, greater personal responsibility, and free enterprise refuse to vote for Republicans because they are so put off by the positions and rhetoric of social conservatives” (Murray 2012). Despite this, we will not alter our party’s base political beliefs and will have to change the topic of the discussion towards the economy/jobs, immigration, foreign policy, and the budget deficit. The most important factor in increasing Republican Party Identification is focusing on the youth of immigrant families, “Enhancing non-familial sources of political learning for children of immigrants may lead to more information sharing and eventually more incorporation for the whole family” (Wong 2014). Since immigration is the root for all Asian American families, it should be a policy that is supported by our party. Upon looking at immigration, an important aspect of gaining Republican Party identification is directly targeting the young adults of the Asian American community. They are the best way for our party to efficiently communicate with the adults/parents of the Asian American community. For example, a filial connection begins and ends with trust meaning that the words of the youth will have a direct impact on the older generation which can easily sway their party identification towards the Republican Party.
