Discourse Essay
Being Within A Community
Throughout the most recent portion of this class we have been discussing and analyzing discourse. We have taken it into our hands to express a more personal way that discourse affects our lives rather than to just read about it in the text: Writing About Writing. In this assignment we were asked to investigate a discourse community that we are A) Either involved in or B) Would like to be involved in. With that being said; throughout the past couple weeks of research and investigation; I had landed upon rodeo, which is actually the discourse community that I call my own. To become a member of the MSU rodeo team you must be offered a position by the coach, Andy Bolich. You can send in videos to the coach and a letter explaining why you believe you have the talent to bring potential points to the team. The MSU rodeo team competes in NIRA sanctioned events within the states of Montana and Wyoming; which encompass our Big Sky region. MSU competes not only as a team as a whole, but as a men’s and women’s team, as well as individual athletes. Women can compete in breakaway roping, goat tying, and barrel racing. Men can compete in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, and tie down roping. Both men and women can compete in the team roping event. But my goals relate more specifically to doing the best that I can and giving myself every opportunity to succeed; which includes keeping my 3 horses in shape, attending practice everyday, staying positive when things don’t exactly go my way, and remembering to keep my head in the game. I rodeo because it makes me feel so incredibly free, without rodeo as a stress outlet I do not know where I would be today, when I step into the saddle all of my worries in life disappear and it is just me and my horses. I rodeo for that adrenaline thrill I get as they call my name and I enter the arena for my 20 seconds in the spotlight, I would not trade that feeling for anything in the world. I have been participating in the sport of rodeo for the past 7 years and I plan for it to be the sport I compete on for the rest of my life, it is my passion. My personal favorite event is the barrel racing, it is so dependant to have a bond like no other with your horse in order to be successful. It has been a dream of mine since I was young to be able to college rodeo and to be here at MSU rodeoing for the team brings so many feelings of joy that I can barely even begin to explain. I am living the life I have always dreamed
