Khaled Hosseini’s purpose of the book was not only to teach readers valuable lessons, but also to show how Afghanistan was at that time and how the circumstances affected the population. Starting with the radical discrimination of pashtuns and the Hazaras. Hazaras were always mistreated by the pashtuns. Most of them used to work for the pashtuns as servants. For instance, Baba and Amir lived comfortably in a big house, in comparison to Ali and Hassan who live in the basement. Despite that Amir and Hassan had a very strong bond, sometimes, Amir was affected by the discrimination towards the Hazaras. In addition, as a result of the Russian Invasion, Baba and Amir had to leave Afghanistan and immigrate to America in order to save their lives. “Life is never the same for any of them. Revolution, invasion and terror change Kabul forever” (Two Perspectives on Afghanistan). After the Russian gave up Afghanistan, Taliban took over. People thought that this was the end of the operation they were experiencing. Unfortunately, the Taliban were worse. They started forcing rules and banning the Afghans from performing the activities they grew up doing such as kite running, music and celebrations. “Since taking control of Kabul in September 1996, the Taliban has advocated an `Islamic Revolution' in Afghanistan. Much of their initial popularity was due to a campaign to rid the country of corrupt Mujahedin leaders” (Martin). The Taliban used to control Afghans and treat them with violence. Taliban wanted to get rid of Hazaras and people who did not follow the rules. Sinners used be thrown with stones till death as a punishment. Amir pointed how Ghazi stadium used to be a place where people gathered to watch the game and have fun, and now it is a place for torturing
