American literature has changed over its history as well as stayed the say from its writers to its styles of writing. From 1865-1914 and even 1914-1945 there wasn’t much of a mix on writers of race. Much American literature was written by white men and women until blacks were starting to get more rights. Langston Hughes wrote poems about the struggle of being a Negro during his time. The styles of writing has remained the same from word choice, sentence arrangements and establishing moods.

I think the dream symbolized that if the boy wanted the “American Dream” that he would have to really work for it. Before this dream, he worked his butt off to get the opportunity to give his speech to the white men. He knows that he has to go to college and graduate and once he succeeds at this than he will be on his path towards the dream.
5. Briefly explain the significance of the quilts in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use.”
The significance of the quilts in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” is the passing down of generation to generation. Maggie’s grandmother had stitched the two quilts by hand and they also included dresses that she used to wear. As well as clothes from Maggie’s grandmother, there were also pieces of old clothes stitched to that were her great grandmothers. These two quilts compared to the others actually had sentimental value to Maggie and her mother. This explained why Maggie’s mother told her she could have them when she gets married.
