In 2022, 105 Ontarioans died due to distracted drivers. Distracted driving makes up about 18% of all fatal road accidents in Ontario. There are many ways in which drivers can keep everyone safe. These involve not drinking before driving or putting away distractions. It sounds simple, but it doesn't always happen. In cases like these, there are many things that passengers can do. Things like using technology to their advantage, using safe distractions, and even the use of persuasion can be beneficial.

Technology is considered to be a distraction while driving. A driver should never touch their device while the vehicle is in motion. If the driver is prone to using their phone while driving and needs to see it at all times, this is what I would do; Instead of shutting it in the glove box or somewhere the driver can’t see it, I would use special features on the phone and leave it somewhere they can safely see that it is okay. These distractions are what I like to call “safe distractions”. They allow the driver to focus on driving safely, while also having something to do. Safe distractions can vary depending on the driver. Some drivers are okay to talk to while driving, and others are not. Figuring out the best safe distraction is important. Safe distractions can be simple and range from talking to the car group or passenger, to putting on music. These distractions distract the driver from “dangerous distractions”. These distractions can include being on their device, looking around, fixing hair or makeup, or letting their minds wander.
