The current world that we live in ever changing with that being said gun control has become more of hot topic over the last several years. We are trying to find better laws for gun control. Better rules that limit who can and cannot purchase guns. I think the case law that comes to mind when we speak of gun control is District of Columbia V. Heller. From the 1976 issues to the reasoning of the case in 2007-2008.In 1975, the Council of D.C. passed the Firearms Control Regulation Act, also known as the Act, which was a response to increased gun violence and accidental deaths due to firearm use and possession. The law specifically banned ownership of handguns and required that lawful firearms be registered with the city. In 2006 this rule came …show more content…
V. Heller it was made a crime to possess an unregistered firearm and prohibited the registration of handguns. It also banned possession of unlicensed handguns and required a one-year license to be issued by the Chief of Police. This made it illegal to possess a handgun not registered before the law took effect. Many people think this was a very clear and dry case however, that is just not the case.Heller was a D.C. special policeman who was denied permission to register a handgun for his home use. Several of the Justices believe that the Second Amendment is only for the military use and has no bearing on personal ownership of guns and how they are used. The other side of the Justices believe that the Second Amendment does verify rules for the military and for personal ownership of guns in the home. However, the question stands how far and how much power does the Second Amendment hold? Should the right to bear arms in your home be limited and should you be told on how to keep the gun preserved in your house. The right to bear arms is not absolute, that some restrictions may be placed and that “the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose” meaning there can be some regulations of bearing arms. I personally believe that the Second Amendment was and is a right for every one to bear arms. All of the gun violence and shootings that I have heard of or have seen on TV are all very horrible. However, I don’t think that we should have our gun rights taken away because of them. I believe that we all have a right to this amendment; however, we do better gun control laws and a way to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. Even with new gun rules and regulations accidents and shooting are always going to happen. There is just no way to
