Veronica Roth writes a dystopian trilogy called Divergent that explores the life of a sixteen year-old girl named Beatrice “Tris” Prior. This paper is focused on the ethical analysis of an ethical dilemma placated in the story. As the paper digresses, it focuses on the argument about the theory pertaining to the dilemma, the theories used and the counter argument that could be presented.
The ethical dilemma begins with Tris running from three Dauntless simulation controlled soldiers where she is faced to a friendly face, Will. This ethical dilemma is prominent to the story. Because the grief Tris is already feeling, due to her mother’s death, it is increased tenfold when the situation presents itself. The decision portrays Tris and the war within herself over self-preservation and self-destruction. She recognizes that the men that killed her mother are not doing this by free will but in the moment that does not matter, she shoots blindly at them. The dilemma Tris faces is one of a stereotypical movie. The hero choosing between right and wrong, the greater good, their life and the mind controlled enemy. Having the fallen hero plot line is no where near new but the heart strings that are reattached time and time again never grow dull. As Tris has no time to think about her actions, she shoots and is immediately immersed in the grief she knew to come. In that moment she thinks of Will and his smile, realizing it was a choice between her life and his and she choose hers and is now facing the consequences. This is where one can begin to identify Tris beginning to self-destruct and feel inclined to become a sacrifice for the greater good.
