Convergent Versus Divergent Thinking is an article in the Encyclopedia of Creativity, Invention, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. There are two authors for this article, Kyung Hee Kim and Robert A. Pierce. Both of the authors of this article are professors at Universities., specifically Kyung Hee Kim is a professor at The College of William and Mary and Robert A. Pierce was a lecturer at Christopher Newport University, but now is a professor at George Mason University. Kyung Hee Kim field is in creativity, which relates directly to what the article is about, where as Robert A. Pierce field is in history. Throughout the article it has specific titles in which each lead to the next, but introduce a new topic of how these ways of thinking work. After reading the article, it provides the understanding of what convergent and divergent thinking are as well as going out to even say how these may work together and how schools can change the convergent way of thinking. In the section describing the creative process it says, “ Convergent thinking and divergent thinking are both necessary for creativity, but in different relative amounts, depending on the creative domain” (Kim and Pierce 246). This point is saying how each way of thinking has different aspects to it and works best for some cases, but “creativity occurs when these two processes complement each other” (Kim and Pierce 246). Through the understanding of how these ways of thinking work and how they are better when working together the next section talks about it relates to education. Kim and Pierce say, “ educations systems, because they typically encourage convergent thinking, have generally favored development and measuring of IQ rather than of creativity” (247). I agree with this statement because as I am as student while attending early education I was not as able to flourish my creativity in the way I strived for. The education system is based off Essentialism, which relates to convergent thinking of having one answer to a problem or solution and the purpose of education is to focus on preparing students for the future ( Kim and Pierce 247).
