Given what we've learned this semester, diversity, biases, racism and stereotyping, the history of education and deculturalization in the United States, gender equity, and sexuality, multicultural education, social class and the hidden curriculum are some of the reasons why diversifying education to reach all learners is very important. K-12 and college classrooms are filled with students from different cultures, English Language Learners, at-risk, struggling, students with disabilities, GLBTQ amongst others, respectively. Diversity means have different academic levels, beliefs, religious and cultural backgrounds, GLBTQ, etc. Today, diversity amongst students is important because schools are the foundation of what is to be expected in the workplace. Diversity teaches students how to respect and recognize others different from themselves. A profession in the education field requires teachers to be aware of their own biases and not modeling discrimination against any student in the classroom. Teachers should provide students with an inclusive learning environment. Students should feel comfortable, safe and respected in the classroom, regardless if he/she has a learning disability, English Language Learner, GLBTQ, etc. There needs to be more chances for academic success and less isolation among the students. By fostering this type of learning environment, it can move beyond the classroom setting which can lead to equality outside of school, in future workplaces and in living communities. Classrooms are filled with students from different backgrounds, therefore, it is important to represent everyone equally. This can be done through the curriculum.
