“Hollywood Has A Major Diversity Problem, USC Study Finds”, the headline to an NPR article reads. The University of Southern California conducted a study that analyzed the numbers of diverse characters in Hollywood. People were surprised with the study because it exposed the lack of inclusion there is in film and tv shows. The inspiration to conduct their study came from the hashtag ‘#OscarsSoWhite’ that criticized the Oscars for all the nominees being white in 2016. Most characters on film and television are all white, straight men and women. Women of color, the LGBTQ community, female filmmakers, and people with disabilities are all misrepresented on screen. Income and class also play a significant role in this issue because most characters portrayed in film are upper-middle class and have beautiful big homes. They don’t portray what it’s really like to be a middle/ lower class American. Gender is involved when it comes to lack of diversity in Hollywood because they are not given the credit they deserve when it comes to working behind the camera. This film set the perfect example that more movies with a diverse cast and creators should be made in the future. “By every metric, Black Panther has already proven itself a box office smash, a critical darling and a bonafide cultural phenomenon.” This proves that ‘Black Panther’ was successful in the box office and at representing a certain culture. Adding more minorities on screen would be successful because people want to see something different on screen, but they want to see it done
