Definition of the Topic
The meaning of diversity has changed from prior years to the present. Since the 1980s, diversity in the workforce has expanded when the U.S workforce were dominated by white men. Prior years diversity in the United States meant repairing the past discrimination against African Americans. Today diversity is building by recognizing both subtle and obvious differences among employees at every administrative level. White man were the only ones able to get jobs at any position today the amount of African Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanics within the U.S has increase in population and also in the workforce. Initiatives can have a short or long-term focus, as well as very specific goals and objectives. It should also be easily measurable and tied to the organization's overall business strategy. In terms of implementing the initiative, the entire organization from the top down should be held accountable for implementation and the overall success. According to a 2001 Society for Human Resource Management/Fortune survey, the majority of the 121 US HR professionals who responded said that diversity initiatives affect their organizations’ bottom lines in several positive ways including: -improved corporate culture -improved recruitment of new employees -improved client relations -improved productivity (“What is a diversity initiative? ”) There are two different types of diversity known as primary diversity and secondary diversity. Age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities, race, and sexual orientation are all apart of primary diversity, which can’t be changed.
