For many years, there has been a debate on the topic of doctor assisted suicide in Canada. The debate question is if a terminally ill person decides they wish to end their life, is it acceptable for others to assist them? Some are against it because of religious and moral reasons. Others are for it because of their respect for the dying. Physicians opinions are also mixed on the issue, they have different beliefs that separates relief from dying. Suicide is universally accepted to be a preventable tragedy. Many terminally ill patients who are in the final stages of their lives have requested doctors to help them in executing suicide. There are mixed opinions about if euthanasia is ethnically acceptable. Whereas assisted suicide may have seemed somewhat unethical, the legalization of doctor assisted death in Canada was an appropriate decision to make considering that it ends the suffering for terminally ill patients. Extremely sick patients are faced with tremendous pain, suffering and fear. Doctor assisted suicide allows these patients to stop their suffering. The legalization of assisted suicide can save the family, the hospital and the government a lot of money. This money that is saved can go towards patients that are savable. Having the choice of euthanasia allows the patient to die without guilt for having their loved ones pay for their medical bills. Lastly, physician assisted suicide allows sick patients to die with dignity and it gives them a sense of control. For some people, knowing when they are going to die is less terrifying. These are just a few of the benefits that came with the legalization of assisted suicide.
