The question now is, are women also being marked and judged by how their body looks? The answer is yes. Women are also being marked based on their body shapes and sizes. Because of that, most of the women tend to take into account other peoples’ perception of the socially desirable way to dress up and the body shape that they ‘should’ own and try their best to be eluded from being judged by others. Nowadays, we can see that people are inclined to praise thin models and celebrities. Plus, media always shows the benefits of being thin—you are more likely to be popular and praised. Thus, it is clear that this exposure to social media can cause harm and produced false perception of the perfect body image to the audience. An article written by Liz Dwyer with a title U.K model leads charge to ban ultrathin women from fashion, supports this statement. This article claims that many girls, especially those who in grade 5-12 reported that when they see thin women in the media, it invokes their feeling of insecurity and makes them feel keen to lose weight. It is okay to lose weight, but to lose weight in an unhealthy way until being hospitalized for eating disorder problems is very problematic. The advertisement of Real Beauty Campaign by Dove portrays women from various body shapes, sizes, age, height and even race, unlike the Victoria Secret’s advertisement. This campaign is intended to inspire women as women around the world refused to call their own-self as beautiful as they believe that they do not have the ‘perfect’ body, height, size and shape. So, we can see that the main purposes of the campaign are they want to try to put an end to the never-ending markedness of women and to disprove the distorted social demands of our society. If we put Victoria Secret and Dove’s advertisement side by side, it seems like Dove want to mock the Victoria Secret advertisement. Besides, we can see that they are really contrasting from each other and they also want to deliver a different kind of message. Dove is not using typical, thin and tall models to promote their products, instead, they are using women that having different types of body shapes and sizes. We can see that Victoria Secret advertisement promotes the fantasy side of women’s body and Dove advertisement portrays the reality of the women’s body—women have variety types of body shape and size and that variation what makes women
