Dollree Mapp was arrested in her home, in Cleveland Ohio, for possession of “obscene” material. Initially, Cleveland police received a report that a suspect from a bombing a few days before was residing in Dollree’s house. Officers then went to her home and asked to be let inside, but Dollree called her lawyers and they informed her that she only has to let the police in if they have a legal warrant. The officers admitted to Dollree that they did not actually have a warrant, so Dollree refused their request to search her home. After the Lieutenant Officer from the Cleveland Bureau of Special Investigation showed up, the police forced an entry into Mapp’s house. Sergeant Delau then proceeded to struggle with Dollree Mapp to retrieve the paper from inside her blouse. After their encounter, and the Sergeant had the paper again, Mapp was then handcuffed to the bed and police continued searching her house for several hours. Resulting from the search, police officers found Virgil Ogletree in the basement along with an un-loaded gun, paraphernalia, and several ‘obscene’ books and sketches.
