“In violence we forget who we are” (McCarthy). Too timid to report, too fearful to leave will there ever be freedom for me uttered the victim of a domestic violence act. Domestic violence is a widespread issue that takes place not only in America but in other countries as well. Accounts of these senseless acts started becoming public in the mid-1900s and have only increased over the years. One notices that although domestic violence acts are indeed classified as criminal offenses they often go unpunished due to the high number of occurrences that take place on a day to day basis. To be exact, the civil rights, anti-war and African American liberation began to challenge the country in 1950s throughout the 1960s laying the foundation for the feminist movement to take place as reported by the Pennsylvania Welfare Training Program. The feminist movement was started in hopes to dismantle workplace inequality and allow women the same opportunity as men (Collins 368-369). Women wanted equality in things such as salary inequity, however, because women were viewed as subjects to their husbands via “head and master” laws it came by no surprise when the rate of domestic violence went up and finally made its debut publically (Coontz 46). Though domestic violence was around before one can even think about grasping, it hid in a shadow behind an individual who longed for freedom but knew that seeking help would be of no avail as the justice system at the time did not hold an individual particularly men accountable for ones action against an individual. Furthermore, an individual learns that not only women are effected but men and children suffer at the same rate. Children suffer as they watch or endure pain from seeing the violence within the household and men become vulnerable to women as they began to regain their individuality. Not one particular person or group are subject to domestic violence acts as it has begun to take over society as whole. As these senseless acts stay on the rise, individuals observe that it is not being taken seriously. Though these acts are considered criminal offenses they are hardly ever enforced which is another issue society is suffering from. As of today there are no known solutions to diminishing the problem of these violence acts, however, there are many foundations that will help victims get away from their perpetrator such as the battered woman program. In the near future no change is said to be seen but if society trains their people to be able to detect as well as report acts of violence as well as have the justice system strictly enforce as well as punish abusers change will happen and it will only be for the
