One in five women are sexually assaulted while in college; one in four will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. One in three abused children will become an adult abuser or victim. I want to become a family lawyer to change the statistics. Statistics like these are what started my drive to want to practice law and work to make an impact in this field.
When I think about going to law school, I think about the difference I can make by studying family law. I started trying to make a difference my freshman year by working in the Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center. It has shaped me to be more aware of the victimization of people and the abuse of power that we see in our world on a daily basis. I want to be able to help the women that have to fight with a nation that seems to try to teach victims to not be raped instead of teaching others not to rape, and also trying to teach women they deserve the things that they received. I would be able to help through situations, such as, custody cases and disentangling finical ties that many depend on. I want to be able to help victims who are fighting the helpless feeling and trying to help them feel like they do not have to be victims. I want to be able to do this by fighting for them legally, such as, fighting as a lawyer to help a woman get out a domestic abusive relationship, trying to fight for custody of children in these types of issues. I would like to be able to support the victims of violence, and be able to help children be able to get out of abusive situations. I want to make sure these women and men are cared for mentally and make sure they receive justice for the crimes committed against
