I was motivated to apply for the immersion trip for many reasons, one of these being that I have family members who have been to the Dominican Republic. When I heard about their great experiences it made me really want to participate in this trip. I heard about the work they did and the love that they have for the people there, and I want to be able to have these same experiences. I was also motivated to apply because I want to experience what life is like for people living in a developing country. I realize how lucky I am to live in the U.S., and I want to experience the hardships that people in developing countries endure every day. I can read stories and watch films about their hardships, but I believe that there is no real substitute …show more content…
While I am currently studying Spanish, I am not fluent in the language, which could make it difficult for me to speak with the Dominicans. I am also worried about being in a completely new country with unfamiliar surroundings. At the same time, this can also be very exciting and eye-opening, which makes this less concerning. If I were to participate in the trip, I would hope that I would become more aware of the world around me and the actions that I could take to help people in developing countries. I would also hope to gain a greater appreciation for the conditions I live in. I would hope that the group would be supportive of each other throughout the whole experience so that everyone can have the best possible experience. When I hear the phrase "Building God's Kingdom on Earth", I think of small acts of charity and kindness that, together, make God's kingdom. I think of people doing small acts in their everyday lives to makes the lives of others a little easier, in hopes of making their community a better place. A time when I committed to building God's Kingdom on Earth was when I decided to volunteer at The Hope Center. The Hope Center is an organization for kids who live in North Omaha, which provides homework help, a hot dinner, and social activities for many kids. When I chose to volunteer, I committed to building God's Kingdom by helping the kids to grow to their full
