Don Benito Juarez was born on March 21, 1806, in San Pueblo Guelatao, Oaxaca, Mexico. He was born into a poor family. The beginning of his life involved the death of his parents, so his grandparents then raised him for a couple of years. Juarez was therefore raised in a heavily indigenous Zapotec family which ultimately led to Juarez’s inability to speak Spanish. Later in his life Benito Juarez went onto to live with his uncle, who Juarez was working with until he turned thirteen. After, being with his uncle, Benito Juarez decided to walk forty miles to go back to Oaxaca to live with his sister. Benito Juarez’s sister was working as a cook, and Juarez knew that he needed a job. His new job was to be a servant of Antonio Salanueva. However, Salanueva did not treat him like an ordinary servant. At the beginning, he was recognized as the defender for the Native American rights when he was serving as a councilman. His new position, in 1841, was judge and he served as governor of the state. His reputation increased dramatically when he married one of Oaxaca’s wealthiest families daughter, Margarita Maza. Even with a higher status, the conservative dictator, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna has exiled many liberal thinkers, including Don Benito Juarez. After leaving Mexico he went to live in New Orleans for some time, and he worked in a cigarette factory. The transition did not stop Benito Juarez from believing in overcoming Santa Anna’s dictatorship. He had meetings with other liberal thinkers that were exiled from Mexico.
