Don Iveson’s Body Language as Mayor-elect
Context and Background
After current mayor Don Iveson won the municipal election and became the thirty-fifth mayor in 2013, he had an interview on what used to be Breakfast Television on CityTV where he discusses about his campaign. He talks about his future as the new mayor as well as his acceptance speech the night of the election and the diversity being created in his group of city councilors. From this interview, Don Iveson’s body language is portrayed as nonchalant and confident. This gives the viewers their first impression on Iveson as he becomes the mayor of Edmonton.
Observations
Facial Expressions
In the beginning, Don Iveson smiles at the interviewer twice: once when shaking hands and the second time when he laughs about the headlines from two newspapers. Later, his facial expression remains neutral, though – at one point – he tucks his lips in for a split second as if the mouth was a line. He keeps his eye contact with the interviewer, but at times, he looks down and away from the news anchor.

For instance, his neutral facial expression sends a message to the viewers that having "a lot of sacrifice and public service" (Breakfast Television, 2013) as a mayor are serious; therefore, the viewers -- based on the facial expression -- must take them seriously such as the issues he brought into the campaign.
