During the 2016 Presidential election, Donald Trump spent an immense amount a time traveling around the country to deliver speeches at rallies and conventions, in hope that he could persuade more people to vote for him for President of the United States. During his speeches he followed rhetorical concepts that were mentioned in Writing in Political Science by Mika LaVaque-Manty and Danielle LaVaque Manty (2016). First, rhetoric in this sense is defined as the art of persuasion of using words, images as tools to get others to agree with you. For instant, he targeted men, women, college students, the middle class, to help increase his chance of becoming President. During his rally’s and speeches to these groups he kept them in mind and would alter his ideas to convince them. Next, Trump had one major purpose throughout his campaign, and that was to “make America great again” and the only way to do that was to win the election. His slogan was advertised on social media pages, clothing, and billboards. His slogan was already a form of rhetoric he convinced may voters that America was already not great and if they desired change he would be the one to do that. Next, the genre of Trumps speeches is another major concept. For instance, when taking on the Presidential debate it was important that he kept a professional tone, and it was important to stick to statistics and fact. In contrast, Donald Trump’s social media tweets and Facebook status genre are quite different then his speeches. Lastly, it was important for Trump to gain credibility from the voters.
