I think that the whole basis of the Revolution was that they were upset with the fact that they were paying taxes without any kind of benefits of doing so. Thus the phrase, “taxation without representation,” was born. The colonists were appalled at the fact that they had no voice in electing officials to parliament and had to sit idly by while laws were being passed without their voice being heard. Tyranny is defined as rule by one who has absolute power without legal right, so by definition and by Jefferson’s claims, King George is nothing by a tyrant. As Jefferson stated, “A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people” (Jacobus 264). An article from Time Magazine, called This Is What Ancient Greeks Would Have Called Donald Trump, the author, Devin Singh, speaks about the opportunistic ascent of Trump, “The ancient Greeks believed that the tyrant’s ascent is as much an indictment of the political class of the day as it is of the would-be usurper, and today, critics on both the right and left are correct to point out the self-indicted implosion of the Republican Party. But the problem is much broader and includes failures of the left and of our political system itself. We must address the anger and disempowerment that fueled Trump’s rise, while also stopping Trump. In his campaign, the seeds of tyranny lie waiting to take root” (Singh 1). Singh makes a very interesting point in the sense that the tyrant, Trump, used public discourses, steamrolling of the opposition, and capitalized on civil unrest to gain power. It also goes to show us that our political system is flawed and needs an update. The electoral college was created so as to create more equality when voting between states back in the early 19th century while the United States was in a period of development. All these factors are what led to the outcome that we are all dreading
