When Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi, better known as Donatello, was an artist, he would smash most of his works of art instead of selling them to selfish buyers. Not many of his pieces survived but the ones that did are true works of art (The Medici, Godfathers of Renaissance). As well as smashing his works, he would yell at his works during the process of making them,“speak, damn you, speak!” ("Medici Godfathers of the Renaissance-Donatello"). Donatello's great works of art created during the Renaissance era made his more recent works even more famous. His father was Niccolo di Betto Bardi, who was a member of the Wool Combers Guild and his mother was Orsa Bardi. He made and sold wool to support his family. Since his father was a craftsman, he was put on the path of trading goods and he was given the status of a craftsman. Donatello's birth name is Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi but was given the nickname Donatello at a young age. Cosimo de'Medici was a good friend of Donatello and helped him to get the opportunities he had, to become the great artist he is known for. He was educated at the Martellis home in Florence. The Martellis family was known for being wealthy bankers who were close acquaintances of the Medici family. At the Martellis home, he most likely got training from a local goldsmith. This goldsmith helped Donatello learned how to fabricate metals as well as other substances. Donatello's master who helped him learn the arts was Lorenzo Ghiberti. (Art: Over 2,500 Works 97). In Florence, Italy, he received his training from Lorenzo which leads him to the creation of the Bronze doors for the Baptistery of the Florence Cathedral. George uses some amazing art forms which enhanced the way people look at each of his pieces. The St. George was built in the 1416 and is located in Florence, Italy. The St. George was originally created for the Armorers guild of Florence. The St. George has many strong, masculine features showing off his real strength. The way his body is positioned, standing upright and tall facing forward with such power towards others. His left hand is curled to the front of him leaning on his shield which is about half the size of him. He is wearing a chest plate, bulky boots a cloak with a faint skirt and a pair of gloves. In front of him he is holding a rather large shield with fingers on the right hand slightly bent meaning he is holding a sword or some other weapon ("St. George"). Donatello’s St.George is one of the first examples of linear perspective to construct a representation of space(Gowing 181).
