A November Landscape written by EJ Pratt and Winter written by Dorothy Livesay are very unique poems. The poem A November Landscape talks about the times and weather changes. Winter talks about the seasons and how they affect us. Both A November Landscape and Winter are interesting and intriguing poems to read. Both poems are very similar in terms of meaning and imagery, but they are also very different, which makes you more excited to read the next line.

In both of these poems, we see different kinds of tones used to describe the environment. However, in both poems we see a very dark tone used. In A November Landscape the land is bereft meaning deprived of something. Lines three and four of stanza one read “but drabs and yellows on a land bereft of bird and leaf, of body and soul”. Here we can make an inference that the land is lacking singing birds and people walking. Some could even say its missing harmony and nice weather. In a more somber mind set, A November Landscape talks about desolation and regret, giving the atmosphere a very depressing image. The poem Winter talks about iron chains of cold and sharp snares giving images of death and decay to the reader. It also talks about the time changing and the author adds “breathing a last cool sigh” which could be interpreted as winter coming to an end.

The seasons are dying and are waiting for spring to arrive. However, at the end of A November Landscape we can see a happier ending, and in Winter we see more of a sad ending, which makes the poems different. Both poems show signs of life and death and are written so that the reader questions himself. They show different meanings than what you can actually
