Dorthea was born in 1802 in Hampden, Massachusettes where she spent most of her young life taking care of her two younger brothers. As Dorthea got older she had trouble with authority and the structure that her Grandmother provided her and she was sent to live with family in a neighboring town. She spent her time teaching young women and even opening multiple schools for wealthy women and children to be taught. Dorthea spent her spare time writing children’s books and poems. In 1836 Dix travelled to England to be with friends but after 18 months she returned back to Massachusetts after her Mother and Grandmother passed.

In 1841 she began teaching Religious classes to women inmates in a Massachusettes jail. While she was teaching
