Du Bois used the double consciousness to reference three different issues. The first was the power of stereotypes in black’s life and thoughts. For example, a black man knows how to read, but the stereotype is that blacks can’t read. This has impacts on black lives constantly being put down. It encourages blacks to be uneducated to fulfil the expectations of the stereotypes given by whites. When thoughts of wanting to achieve something, and break out of the stereotype the blacks are probably thinking there is no point. The world is run by the superior race of whites who look down upon the inferior race of blacks. All of this is the outcome from the whites refusing to recognize blacks as human beings. The second is the double consciousness of
